US pulls team from Gaza ceasefire talks, blames Hamas for ‘selfish’ stance

The United States is pulling its team out from negotiations seeking a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Steve Witkoff, US special envoy for peace missions, said Hamas’ latest response showed “a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza”.

“While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith,” Witkoff said in a statement issued on Thursday.

“We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza. It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way.

“We are resolute in seeking an end to this conflict and a permanent peace in Gaza.”

It is not clear what tactic Washington would deploy to bring the war between Israel and Hamas to an end.

Analysts say Witkoff’s announcement could be a negotiating tactic to try to get the group to change course in the discussions.

Talks between both parties have been shaky over competing demands for ending the war.

Hamas has insisted that it would only release all hostages in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal and an end to the war.

Israel says it will not agree to end the war until Hamas gives up power and disarms—a condition the militant group rejects.
