Two Nigerians, identified only as Austin and Ayo, were fatally shot by unidentified gunmen in Durban, South Africa, on Thursday, July 9, 2025, in a brutal attack that has left the local Nigerian community in shock.
The incident took place around 8 p.m. at Austin’s office, where he operated a car sales and tyre business.
According to reports, three masked gunmen stormed the premises, catching Austin and his friend Ayo, who was visiting, off guard.
Without warning or conversation, the assailants opened fire, k!lling both men on the spot.Fidelis, a friend of one of the victims, recounted the tragic event in a phone interview with The Punch on July 21, 2025.
“Austin was running his usual business, and Ayo had stopped by to see him. They were just standing there, chatting, when these masked men rushed in with guns. They didn’t say a word—just shot them both,” Fidelis said.
He noted that customers in the shop at the time fled in panic upon seeing the armed intruders.Witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots and seeing the gunmen flee the scene immediately after the attack.
Despite efforts to rush Austin and Ayo to a nearby hospital, medical staff confirmed their deaths upon arrival.Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident, obtained by The Punch from a Nigeria-based source familiar with the case, captured the chilling moment of the attack.
The video shows Austin and Ayo engaged in conversation when the gunmen emerged from the rear of the shop. Austin was shot at close range, while Ayo was gunned down while attempting to flee.
Speculation surrounds the motive for the k!llings, with some suggesting a possible link to a business deal gone wrong, though no concrete evidence has been established.
“We heard about the incident a week later,” the source said. “There are claims it might be related to a business dispute, but we still don’t know the real cause. The authorities haven’t caught the perpetrators yet, and all we’ve been told is that an investigation is ongoing.”
The k!llings have heightened concerns about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, with community members calling for swift justice.
South African police have yet to make arrests, and the investigation remains active as authorities work to uncover the motive and identify the culprits behind this tragic double homicide.
