Trump Diagnosed with Venous Insufficiency, White House Confirms

On July 17, 2025, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump, 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common and benign condition, following a medical evaluation prompted by swollen legs.

Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt informed reporters that the condition, identified by the presidential physician, involves impaired blood flow due to damaged leg veins.

Addressing recent photos showing bruising on Trump’s hand, Leavitt clarified that it resulted from “minor soft tissue irritation” due to frequent handshaking and aspirin use, part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.

Quoting Dr. Reading Barbabella’s note, Leavitt confirmed no evidence of deep vein thrombosis, arterial disease, heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness, with all lab tests within normal limits and an echocardiogram showing no concerns.

Chronic venous insufficiency, affecting about 150,000 Americans annually, is more common with age and can cause leg swelling, aching, varicose veins, or skin changes.

Treatment may involve medication or, in advanced cases, medical procedures.Dr. Jeremy Faust, a Harvard Medical School emergency medicine assistant professor, described the diagnosis as “not alarming” and typical for aging individuals, particularly those in the overweight category like Trump.

He emphasized the importance of evaluating such symptoms to rule out serious conditions, which was done in this case.Leavitt noted that Trump is experiencing “no discomfort” and said further details on treatment would be provided in a forthcoming letter from Dr. Barbabella.
