Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” following five days of intense border clashes that killed at least 33 people and displaced tens of thousands.

The announcement, made by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim alongside Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, marks a critical step toward de-escalating a century-old border dispute that flared up in May 2025.

“This is a vital first step to a de-escalation and a restoration of peace and security,” Anwar said, noting that hostilities would cease at midnight on July 28.

The agreement, brokered in Kuala Lumpur, came after Thailand initially resisted Malaysia’s mediation offer but relented following pressure from US President Donald Trump, who tied tariff negotiations to an end to the fighting.

The conflict escalated after a Cambodian soldier was killed in May, prompting Cambodia to ban Thai imports like fruits, power, and internet services, while Thailand restricted cross-border travel.

Tensions peaked last week when a Thai soldier lost his leg in a landmine explosion, leading Thailand to close border crossings, expel Cambodia’s ambassador, and recall its own. Both sides exchanged gunfire starting Thursday, with Thailand reporting civilian deaths from rocket attacks and Cambodia confirming 13 fatalities, including eight civilians.

Despite ongoing shelling during the peace talks, Anwar emphasized that Malaysia and ASEAN would monitor the ceasefire.

Both nations must now withdraw reinforced troops and accept independent monitoring to prevent further clashes.

Hun Manet called the meeting “very good” and expressed hope for an immediate end to hostilities, as Cambodia’s outgunned forces faced setbacks.

Phumtham Wechayachai pledged to honor the ceasefire but offered no further comment.
