Sokoto State Government Bans Signing-Out Celebrations for Secondary School Graduates

The Sokoto State Government has imposed a statewide ban on all forms of “signing-out” celebrations by graduating secondary school students, citing concerns over safety and public order.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof Ahmad Ladan Ala, during a press briefing in Sokoto.

Prof Ala stated that the decision was prompted by reports of disruptive behaviors associated with these celebrations, including vandalism, public disturbances, and safety risks to students and communities.

“The government is committed to maintaining a conducive environment for education and public safety. These signing-out activities have often led to chaos, and we cannot allow that to continue,” he said.

The ban prohibits activities such as street processions, unauthorized gatherings, and the defacement of school uniforms, which are common during signing-out events.

The commissioner emphasized that schools and parents must ensure compliance, with strict penalties for violators, including potential sanctions on schools that fail to enforce the directive.

This move comes as part of broader efforts by the Sokoto State Government to reform the education sector, which has seen significant investments under Governor Ahmed Aliyu, including the enrollment of over 800,000 children into basic education schools and infrastructure improvements.

The government urged students to channel their excitement into productive activities and focus on their academic transitions.

Education stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions. Some school principals support the ban, citing the need for order, while others argue it restricts students’ freedom to celebrate milestones.

The public is advised to adhere to the directive as enforcement begins immediately.
