Vice President, Kashim Shettima has publicly disagreed with President Bola Tinubu's decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, stating that the president has no constitutional power to remove an elected governor.
Shettima made this statement during a book launch in Abuja,on Thursday, drawing from his experience as a former governor to highlight the dangers of such extra-constitutional actions.
Shettima emphasized that there is no provision in the constitution that grants the president the authority to remove a sitting governor.
He referenced a similar situation during former President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, where the idea of removing him as governor of Borno State was floated. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, then Speaker of the House of Representatives, reportedly told the president that he lacked the power to remove an elected councillor, let alone a governor.
Shettima mentioned that senior lawyers in the cabinet, including Mohammed Adoke and Kabiru Turaki, shared the opinion that the president lacks the power to remove a sitting governor.
This public disagreement highlights a rift between Shettima and Tinubu over Fubara's removal, which was initially reported on March 18, 2025, and later endorsed by the National Assembly.
