Seven Injured in Abia Three-Storey Building Collapse


A three-storey building under construction in Umuahia, Abia State, collapsed around 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, along Olokoro Road in the Federal Low-Cost Housing Estate, injuring seven people. 


The collapse also destroyed a nearby bungalow, home to a family of seven.No deaths were reported, but several victims, including a nursing mother and her five-month-old baby, were rescued from the debris and taken to a hospital for treatment. 


Residents noted the building had shown visible signs of structural issues for some time. “We heard a loud sound around 3 a.m., and it collapsed. 


The building, reportedly owned by a politician, was abandoned in poor condition,” said local resident Ugwumba Shedrack.Kingsley Agomoh, General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), visited the site and expressed relief that no lives were lost. 


The UCDA has sealed the premises and launched an investigation into the collapse, with Agomoh stating that the building’s owner will face legal consequences.
