Seven members of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defecting lawmakers are.
-PDP Lawmakers:
- Unyime Idem, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement
- Martins Esin
- Paul Ekpo
- Uduak Alphonsus
- Okpolupm Etteh
- Mark Esset
YPP Lawmaker:
- Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo
The lawmakers announced their defection through separate letters to the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, during Thursday's plenary. They cited unresolved internal crises in their former parties as the reason for their defection. Unyime Idem specifically mentioned that he was leaving the PDP after 26 years of service due to escalating leadership issues.
This mass defection follows Governor Umo Eno's switch from the PDP to the APC on June 6, 2025, which led to a significant shift in the state's political landscape. Notably, 24 out of 26 members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly had previously defected from the PDP to the APC.
