President Bola Tinubu has nominated Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as a commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC) following the rejection of an earlier offer by Fatima Alkali.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s
letter during plenary, formally notifying lawmakers of the replacement and
requesting expeditious confirmation of the new nominee.
“I write to request the confirmation of the appointment of
the commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission in accordance with the
provisions of section 2(1) of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act 2022,” the
letter read.
“I’m pleased to present for confirmation by the senate the appointment of Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission.”
The president explained that Yusuf was nominated to replace
Fatima Alkali, who did not appear for screening and confirmation after her
nomination in June.
“Distinguished senate president, distinguished senators,
Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf is to replace Professor Fatima Alkali, whose
nomination was earlier presented through my letter dated 22nd June 2025, but
did not appear for screening and confirmation by the senate,” Tinubu said.
“Whilst I hope that the senate will consider and confirm the
nomination of Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf in an expeditious manner, please
accept, distinguished senate president and distinguished senators, the
assurances of my highest consideration.”
Akpabio referred the nomination to the committee on
judiciary, human rights and legal matters for further legislative work.
In June, Tinubu nominated Dakas Dakas as chairman, with
Uchenna Okolocha and Alkali as commissioners of the NLRC.
However, during the presentation of the screening report,
Adeniyi Adegbonmire, chairman of the senate committee on judiciary, human
rights and legal matters, informed lawmakers that Alkali, who was to represent
the north-east, turned down the appointment.
