Sanwo-Olu Launches CNG-Powered Trucks,to Boost Food Security

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday inaugurated a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks as part of the N500 billion ‘Produce for Lagos’ Offtake Guarantee Fund and Programme.

The initiative, launched in Lagos, aims to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance food security nationwide, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the trucks will transport food from various parts of Nigeria to Lagos, addressing inefficiencies in storage and transportation.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos, which accounts for over 50% of food traded in Southwest Nigeria, has a food economy valued at over N6 trillion but loses nearly half its food due to poor logistics.

“This programme will streamline our food systems to better feed our people. The ‘Produce for Lagos’ initiative will provide critical logistics support, connecting directly to Lagos’ vibrant food economy,” Sanwo-Olu said during the launch of the Ecolog logistics trucks, managed by the Lagos State Food Systems Infrastructure Company.

The governor highlighted that the 150 CNG-powered 40-foot trucks can travel across Nigeria and return to Lagos on a single tank, marking a pioneering effort in sustainable logistics.

“These trucks are a first for Nigeria and a significant step for Lagos. They will help create a new agricultural ecosystem,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the N500 billion fund is just the beginning, with private sector partners already showing interest.

“We are building a sustainable agricultural ecosystem with focused policies, a lasting financial model, and infrastructure for future generations. A robust database will ensure accessibility for all,” he said.

The initiative is expected to transform Nigeria’s food supply chain, reduce waste, and strengthen Lagos’ role as the nation’s food market hub.
