Sanwo-Olu Bars New Lagos Council Chairmen from Appointing Secretaries and Councillors

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has prohibited the 57 newly sworn-in local government and Local Council Development Area chairmen from appointing Secretaries to Local Governments and supervisory councillors, creating uncertainty across council areas.

The announcement came during their inauguration at the Sports Ground of Lagos House in Ikeja, where he directed chairmen to appoint Chiefs of Staff to manage daily operations instead, with further appointments to be announced later by the state.

The decision has disrupted expectations, leaving many who anticipated key roles during the election campaign in limbo. Sanwo-Olu urged the chairmen to spend their first 30 to 60 days assessing community needs and adopting inclusive leadership focused on residents’ welfare.

Highlighting the Supreme Court’s affirmation of local government autonomy, he emphasized the chairmen’s direct access to council funds and accountability. “No excuses. No finger pointing. The buck stops with you,” he said, urging transparent and responsible use of autonomy.

He warned that underperformance or betrayal of public trust would not be tolerated, stressing alignment with the state’s THEMES+ agenda.Sanwo-Olu outlined expectations for better roads, safer streets, functional health centres, thriving schools, modern markets, environmental sanitation, youth engagement, and community security.

“Your performance will be measured by the visibility of your actions,” he said, calling for inclusive governance that ensures rural and riverine communities feel government presence.

While pledging state support, he vowed to hold chairmen to high standards. Sesan Olowa, Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki and newly elected Chairman of Conference 57, thanked the governor and residents, promising to uphold APC values and deliver impactful leadership.

The event was attended by First Lady Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr Kadri Hamzat, State Assembly Speaker Mudasiru Obasa, National Assembly members, Governance Advisory Council Chairman Prince Tajudeen Olusi, APC Lagos Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, traditional rulers, market leaders, and party supporters.
