The tragic deaths of Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in Spain last week are believed to be linked to excessive speed.
According to the Spanish Civil Guard, the investigation suggests that the vehicle was traveling beyond the speed limit when it veered off the motorway in the northwestern province of Zamora.
An ongoing investigation is examining “the marks left by one of the vehicle’s wheels… everything points to a possible excessive speed beyond the road’s speed limit”, the Civil Guard said.
“All the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota,” it added.
The car crashed and burst into flames, claiming the lives of both brothers. The Civil Guard had previously indicated that a tyre might have blown out while the vehicle was overtaking, contributing to the accident. However, the latest findings point towards excessive speed as a possible cause.
The news of their passing sent shockwaves through the football world, with an outpouring of grief from fans, players, and political leaders. Diogo Jota had recently gotten married to his partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. The funeral was attended by family, friends, and notable figures from the football world.
Diogo Jota had a successful career, playing for several clubs including Atletico Madrid, Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Liverpool. He earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of the team that won the UEFA Nations League. His brother, Andre, played in midfield for FC Penafiel in Portugal's second tier.
The investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
