PICTORIAL: What "Alligator Alcatraz", U.S Immigration Detention Facility Looks Like


"Alligator Alcatraz," a new migrant detention center in the Florida Everglades, has sparked controversy with its harsh conditions and remote location. 


The facility, designed to hold up to 5,000 detainees, features rows of metal bunk beds enclosed by chain-link fences. 


Former President Donald Trump, who attended the facility's opening, joked about the challenging surroundings, saying, "We're surrounded by miles of treacherous swampland. The only real way out is deportation."


It's Situated in the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport within Big Cypress National Preserve, west of Miami. Surrounded by alligator- and python-filled wetlands, with a perimeter set by natural boundaries, Repurposed FEMA trailers and "soft-sided temporary facilities and "Expected to cost $450 million to operate for a single year.


Critics argue that the facility is inhumane and raises concerns about human rights and environmental impact. The facility's construction in a national park has sparked environmental concerns and pushback from activist groups


Native American leaders have also expressed opposition to the facility.
