In a recent appearance on Channels TV, former Borno State Governor Alimodu Sheriff stirred controversy by claiming that Peter Obi’s victory in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election was primarily due to the large Igbo population in the state.
Sheriff argued that Obi, the Labour Party candidate, secured the highest votes in Lagos because “there are more Igbos in Lagos than other tribes.”
Dismissing the prospects of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in future elections, Sheriff emphasized that the ADC lacks control over any state, making a presidential win unlikely.
When the anchor challenged this by noting that Obi’s Labour Party also had no state under its control yet triumphed in Lagos, Sheriff doubled down on his stance.
“The problem of Peter Obi is that he ran on the platform of his party and his tribe, the Igbos. They voted for him. They will always do that,” Sheriff stated.
Pressed further on Obi’s success in Lagos, a South Western state and not a South Eastern stronghold, Sheriff insisted, “There are more Igbos in Lagos than other tribes.
I lived in Lagos all part of my life since I left England in 1980. Lagos is occupied by the Igbos.”When asked whether Yoruba voters contributed to Obi’s win, Sheriff dismissed the idea, saying, “If they are, they are very small.”
Sheriff’s remarks have sparked debates about tribal dynamics in Nigerian politics, with critics arguing that his statements oversimplify voter behavior and undermine the diverse support for Obi’s campaign.
