Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has presented evidence of his past engagement with the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha.
Obi maintained that his interaction with Abacha was strictly
professional and devoid of political motives.
In a public statement released on Wednesday via X, Obi
reaffirmed that he had never met Abacha before being co-opted into a task force
on port decongestion.
He explained that the meeting was initiated by a group of
traders and importers, including himself, who were concerned about the
prolonged delays in clearing goods at Nigerian ports.
“Our meeting with him was borne out of collective concern as
traders and importers over the prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports.
We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens seeking
pragmatic solutions,” Obi said.
He emphasized that the objective of the engagement was to
advocate for greater efficiency at the ports and propose measures to improve
operations for the benefit of the business community and the Nigerian economy
at large.
To support his claims, Obi released a letter documenting his
appointment to the task force, reiterating his long-standing commitment to
transparency and truth.
“This clarification is offered in the interest of truth, to
reaffirm that our actions were driven solely by a sense of civic duty and not
political ambition,” he added.
Obi acknowledged that the clarification might not sway
critics he described as “mischief makers with ulterior motives,” but stated
that placing the facts in the public domain was necessary for posterity and to
uphold his transparency pledge to Nigerians.
