Peter Obi Never Arrested El-Rufai, Aisha Yesufu Clarifies Amid Political Tensions

Prominent activist and Labour Party (LP) chieftain Aisha Yesufu has debunked rumors circulating on social media that Peter Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, was involved in the arrest of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The clarification comes amid heightened political tensions following the formation of a new opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which both Obi and El-Rufai have joined to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

In a post on X, Yesufu dismissed the claims as “baseless propaganda” aimed at sowing discord within the newly formed coalition. “Peter Obi never arrested El-Rufai.

"These are lies spread to destabilize the opposition’s unity,” she wrote, urging Nigerians to focus on the coalition’s goal of addressing governance failures under Tinubu’s administration.

Yesufu’s statement was in response to unverified reports alleging that Obi, during his tenure as Anambra State governor, had orchestrated El-Rufai’s arrest over a political dispute—a claim lacking any credible evidence.

The rumor appears to stem from historical tensions between Obi and El-Rufai, notably when El-Rufai, as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in 2004, demolished properties in Abuja, including those linked to Anambra State interests.

However, no record exists of Obi ordering El-Rufai’s arrest, and Yesufu’s rebuttal aligns with fact-checking efforts by Nigerian media outlets, which have found no substantiation for the claim.

Meanwhile, Yesufu called on Nigerians to verify information before sharing, warning that “fake news only strengthens bad governance.”

As the 2027 elections loom, the ADC coalition faces the dual challenge of maintaining cohesion among its high-profile members and combating misinformation campaigns.

Yesufu’s clarification underscores the opposition’s determination to stay focused on its mission to provide a united front against Tinubu’s government, despite attempts to derail its momentum.
