'Peter Obi is already Planning to Exit ADC'- Kachikwu

Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has alleged that Peter Obi, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, is planning to leave the ADC due to concerns that the party’s opposition coalition is being tailored to favor former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on July 20, 2025, Kachikwu claimed that Obi and other 2027 presidential aspirants have realized the coalition, which adopted the ADC as its platform, is primarily structured to support Atiku’s ambitions.

Kachikwu stated, “The whole ADC structure is being packaged for Atiku Abubakar. Peter Obi now understands this, and from our understanding, he’s looking in other directions.”

He vowed to reclaim the ADC from what he described as a “hijack” by established politicians, asserting that the coalition’s original intent has been compromised.

Despite these claims, Obi has not publicly confirmed any intention to leave the ADC. In a recent interview, he maintained his membership in the Labour Party, while a faction of the LP led by Usman Nenadi denied awareness of any coalition plans.

Obi’s visible participation in coalition events, including the ADC’s unveiling on July 2, 2025, at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where he endorsed the party alongside Atiku, former Senate President David Mark, and others, suggests his active involvement.

Kachikwu’s allegations have sparked speculation about tensions within the coalition, with some reactions reflecting sentiments that Obi might exit the ADC by January 2026 if not guaranteed the presidential ticket.

However, these claims remain unverified, and the ADC’s interim leadership, including David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, has dismissed Kachikwu’s criticisms, labeling him as disconnected from the party’s current direction.

The coalition, formed to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, has positioned the ADC as Nigeria’s emerging main opposition, drawing heavyweights like Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi. Yet, Kachikwu’s accusations highlight potential rifts, with Obi’s next moves remaining a focal point of political discourse.
