Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has responded to allegations that his recent charitable contributions disproportionately favored the South-East.
The clarification was issued through Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Obi’s former campaign spokesman and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, following a debate triggered by a StatisSense report.
The data platform revealed that Obi donated N540 million between January and July 2025, with the South-East receiving the bulk of the funds. Anambra accounted for N260 million and Enugu N120 million, totaling N415 million for the region.
Other zones received significantly less: North-West (N60 million), North-Central (N60 million), South-South (N35 million), and North-East (N6 million).
The South-West received no donations.Key South-East beneficiaries included the College of Nursing Sciences, Amichi (N10 million), Paul University Awka (N30 million), IHM Health System, Anambra (N100 million), and Christ the King College, Onitsha (N50 million).
Outside the South-East, donations supported institutions like Joseph D. Bagobiri Memorial College, Kafanchan (N20 million), Kubwa Anglican Comprehensive Secondary School & Hospital, Abuja (N20 million), and UNICAL Faculty of Dentistry, Cross River (N20 million).
Tanko defended Obi, emphasizing that the donations were personal and ongoing, not politically motivated.
“These are personal gestures, not tied to any campaign. Don’t be surprised if future donations shift to other regions, like the North,” he said.
He challenged critics to demand similar transparency from other political figures, stating, “If any candidate has made comparable personal donations, let them share their data.”
Tanko reiterated that Obi’s philanthropy spans multiple regions and will continue, urging detractors to focus on substantive comparisons rather than regional biases.
