Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has frowned at members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who are aligning with the new opposition coalition that has adopted the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as its political platform.
The governor spoke on Wednesday at the PDP Stakeholders
Conference in Abuja, adding that no one can be a PDP member and a coalition
member at the same time.
Mohammed, who is the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum,
said that the party can no longer take what he described as ‘indiscipline,’
stressing that the members have to choose only one place to stay.
“We cannot take indiscipline to a level where it becomes
contagious. If you are in PDP, you are in PDP. You cannot be in the PDP and be
in the coalition or another party.
“We cannot take this. Coalition is an aberration. Yes, I
said it. You cannot belong to two places. You cannot be a hermaphrodite; you
cannot be a man and a woman at the same time,” Governor Mohammed said.
Most of the founding members of the party echoed the
governor’s message, saying that people could not be claiming to be members of
the PDP whilst working for the interest of other political parties.
The party, which has been embroiled
in internal crisis for over two years now, saw its presidential candidate in
2023, Atiku Abubakar, resign from the party last week.
The former Vice President stated that his resignation was
due to irreconcilable differences that have emerged within the former ruling party.
He noted that he found it necessary to part ways due to the
current trajectory the party has taken, which, according to him, diverges from
the foundational principles it stood for.
Before him, former Senate President David Mark also resigned
from the opposition party. Mark has already been announced as the interim
chairman of the coalition-adopted party, ADC.
