Iliya Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described the defection of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a routine occurrence, expressing confidence in his imminent return to the party.
Speaking to journalists in Bauchi on Friday, July 18, 2025, Damagum noted that Atiku, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, has a history of leaving and returning to the party.
“It’s expected because this isn’t the first time, and I don’t see it being the last,” Damagum said.
He emphasized the fluid nature of politics, stating, “Politics is flexible, it is dynamic, and you know whatever goes around comes around.”
Recall that Atiku left PDP on Wednesday. In a letter dated July 14, addressed to the chairman of the PDP in his Jada Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku stated that his resignation took effect immediately.
He said, “I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
