PDP Actively Seeks Peter Obi's Return for 2027 Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed ongoing efforts to bring former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, back into its ranks.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi, speaking on Arise Television, described Obi as a vital political asset whose return could significantly enhance the PDP’s prospects in the 2027 general elections.

Abdullahi praised Obi’s impressive performance in the 2023 elections, where he secured over six million votes despite alleged “massive rigging” and “deliberate frustration” of his campaign.

“Peter Obi is our product. We want to get him back because he is a very, very great capital for any political party,” he said, noting that Obi’s strong showing, particularly among young and urban voters, underscores his electoral value.

Obi, who left the PDP for the Labour Party just before the 2023 primaries, finished third in the presidential race, behind PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the eventual winner.

Abdullahi acknowledged Obi’s departure as a setback but emphasized the respect he still commands within the PDP.

“Every political party that gets the opportunity to have him will be at an advantage,” he added.

The PDP is actively consulting and strategizing to unify opposition forces for 2027, with Obi’s return a key part of this plan.

“In the fullness of time, we believe we might get him back. It will be a big boost to the PDP,” Abdullahi stated.

This move aligns with growing calls from political stakeholders and civil society for a united opposition front to challenge the APC’s dominance since 2015.
