Opposition Coalition Denies Dropping ADA Registration, Affirms Dual Strategy with ADC

The coalition of opposition political actors preparing for the 2027 general elections has refuted claims that it has abandoned its bid to register the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) as a new political party, despite its current affiliation with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Dr. Umar Ardo, Secretary of the coalition’s Sub-Committee on the Feasibility of a New Party, clarified on Sunday, July 27, 2025, that the group is pursuing a dual strategy: strengthening ties with the ADC while continuing efforts to secure ADA’s registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ardo dismissed reports suggesting the coalition had shelved the ADA registration, stating, “We are anchored on a two-pronged approach.

The ADC is our temporary vehicle for mobilization, but we are not abandoning our application for ADA.” He noted that the ADA’s registration process is ongoing, with INEC expected to provide clarity by the following week after pre-qualifying political associations to upload particulars via its portal.

The coalition, guided by a feasibility committee chaired by former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, views the ADA as a strategic move to reshape Nigeria’s opposition politics. “Registering a new party is not just tactical; it’s a bold step to offer a credible alternative to the dominant parties,” Ardo said.

The ADA aims to unify opposition stakeholders and provide a fresh vision for Nigerians disillusioned with the Bola Tinubu administration.

Ardo acknowledged that the appointment of former Senate President David Mark as ADC chairman may have fueled perceptions that the ADC and the coalition are fully merged.

“The ADC’s choice of Senator Mark as chairman created a mistaken impression of inseparability,” he admitted, but emphasized that the ADA remains the coalition’s ultimate goal.

Confident in the ADA’s eventual registration, Ardo stated, “Once approved by INEC, the ADA will galvanize opposition efforts and present a formidable alternative in 2027.”
