Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has described Nigeria as a nation in "bondage" under President Bola Tinubu, citing persistent insecurity, economic hardship, and divisive leadership.
Speaking at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a courtesy visit by leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from the southern region, Obasanjo called for a "true national leader" who prioritizes the country over ethnic or regional interests.
“We’ve had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents… but we’ve yet to have a true Nigerian president, one for all, not just their tribe,” Obasanjo stated, emphasizing the need for leadership that unites the nation.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, pray for deliverance, and work to address insecurity, revive the economy, and end tribal politics.
“We are in bondage. Let us keep watching the situation, but more importantly, let us pray that God delivers us,” Guardian quoted Obasanjo as saying.
“Nigeria has disappointed Africa and the world,” he added, lamenting the country’s failure to fulfill its potential as a continental leader.
The NNPP delegation, led by Prince Nweze Onu and Chief Ademola Ayoade, sought Obasanjo’s guidance for their 2027 election plans, echoing his call for people-focused leadership.
Obasanjo, however, distanced himself from partisan politics, declaring, “I belong to no party. Nigeria is my political party. I only care about the country’s progress.”
Obasanjo’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion, with some viewing them as a rallying cry for unity and better governance, while others see them as a sharp critique of Tinubu’s administration, which has grappled with high inflation and security challenges since May 2023.
As Nigeria looks toward 2027, Obasanjo’s words underscore the urgent need for transformative leadership.
