NNPCL Drills Four Oil Wells in Kolmani, Bauchi State

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has successfully drilled four oil wells in the Kolmani area of Bauchi State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to expand oil and gas exploration in the northern region.

The announcement was made by NNPCL Director Yusuf Usman during a two-day interactive session on government-citizen engagement hosted by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna on Wednesday.

The Kolmani oil field, spanning the border between Bauchi and Gombe States, is part of the Kolmani Integrated Development Project, which represents Nigeria’s first major oil discovery in the North.

The drilling of these wells signals a strategic push by NNPCL to tap into the hydrocarbon potential of northern Nigeria, a region historically overshadowed by the oil-rich southern states.

Usman emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing oil and gas exploration in the North, stating, “So far, NNPCL has drilled four wells in the Kolmani area and is currently evaluating the appropriate technology for the next phase of drilling operations.”

In addition to the drilling success, Usman highlighted NNPCL’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative.

As part of this effort, five CNG and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants are under construction in Kogi State.

These facilities are expected to enhance gas supply and accessibility across the northern region, supporting Nigeria’s broader goals of improving energy security and diversifying energy sources.

“These plants will significantly boost gas supply and improve energy access across the North,” Usman noted.

The Kolmani project, which resumed drilling operations in May 2025, is seen as a game-changer for the region’s economy and Nigeria’s energy sector.

Local residents and stakeholders view the development as an opportunity for the North to become a key player in the country’s oil and gas industry.

The initiative also aligns with national efforts to promote equitable infrastructure development and reduce reliance on oil from the southern regions.

NNPCL’s northern strategy includes plans for further drilling activities and the adoption of advanced technologies to optimize production.

The company’s focus on both oil exploration and gas infrastructure development underscores its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s energy capacity while fostering regional economic growth.

As Nigeria continues to navigate global energy demands and domestic economic challenges, the successful drilling in Kolmani represents a step toward a more balanced and sustainable energy future.

With additional gas plants under construction and more exploration planned, NNPCL’s efforts in the North could reshape the country’s energy landscape in the years to come.
