In a significant victory against banditry in northwest Nigeria, troops of the Nigerian Army, operating under Operation FANSAR YANMA, have successfully eliminated notorious bandit leader Dan Dari Biyar during a clearance operation in the western axis of Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State.
The operation, conducted on Thursday, marks a critical blow to criminal elements plaguing the region.
According to security sources, Dan Dari Biyar was neutralized while attempting to collect ransom from relatives of kidnapped victims in a forest corridor stretching between Turtsawa, Mazau, and Zango villages.
Infamously known for his cruel catchphrase, “I prefer ₦500 to a Hausa man,” Biyar was a feared figure who orchestrated deadly raids, kidnappings, and arson attacks across communities in Sokoto and neighboring areas.
His base, deep within the Tidibale forest, served as a hub for coordinated assaults on villages such as Lalle, Tsamaye, Gwaronyo, and the notorious razing of Gidan Sale along the Gundumi axis.
The operation was executed by a joint team of Nigerian Army troops and local security volunteers under the Sokoto State Government’s Community Protection Initiative.
Arms, ammunition, and communication devices were recovered from the scene, and troops are actively pursuing fleeing members of Biyar’s gang to dismantle the remaining network.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who broke the news on X, described Biyar as a ruthless figure responsible for widespread terror in Sokoto’s eastern senatorial zone.
“His elimination is a testament to the military’s commitment to restoring peace in the region,” Makama noted.
The neutralization of Dan Dari Biyar comes amid ongoing efforts to curb banditry in northwest Nigeria, where ethnic tensions and resource scarcity have fueled conflicts between Fulani herdsmen and Hausa communities.
The region has faced years of violence, with Sabon Birni being a hotspot due to its proximity to Niger and the migration of bandit groups from Zamfara and Katsina states.
Local residents expressed relief at the news, with many hoping it signals a turning point in the fight against banditry.
The Nigerian Army has vowed to intensify operations to flush out remaining criminal elements and restore security to affected communities.
