The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding urgent action on unresolved issues concerning doctors’ salary increments and back pay, or face a nationwide strike that could paralyze medical services.
In a communique released after its Emergency Delegates Meeting (EDM) held at Royal Choice Hotel in Abuja on July 26, 2025, the NMA condemned the government’s “nonchalant attitude” toward the welfare of Nigerian doctors and its disregard for previously signed collective bargaining agreements.
The association warned that unless the government comprehensively addresses their 19-point demand within the stipulated period, doctors across Nigeria would go on indefinite strike.
“The EDM following extensive deliberations unanimously condemn the attitude of the Federal Government to the welfare of its members,” the communique stated, adding that a 21-day notice for an indefinite strike is effective from July 27.
The NMA, representing thousands of doctors across Nigeria, expressed frustration over the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon salary adjustments and clear outstanding payments.
The NMA’s demands include the immediate payment of salary arrears, improved working conditions, and the restoration of allowances adjusted without agreement.
The association emphasized that the strike, if triggered, would disrupt hospitals nationwide, exacerbating challenges in a healthcare system already strained by underfunding and staff shortages.
The Federal Government is yet to issue an official response, but sources within the Ministry of Health suggest negotiations are ongoing to avert the crisis.
The NMA has called on the public to pressure the government to meet its demands, stressing that a functional healthcare system is essential for national stability.
