Nigerian Air Force to Bolster Fleet with 49 Advanced Aircraft by 2026

At the 2025 Aircraft Engineering Conference held at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) headquarters in Abuja, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, unveiled plans to expand the NAF’s aerial fleet with 49 cutting-edge aircraft by the end of 2026.

The acquisitions include three CASA 295 transport planes, 10 AW-109 Trekker Type B helicopters, 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters, and 24 M-346 fighter jets.

Speaking at the event themed "Enhancing Aircraft Serviceability in the NAF through Strong Maintenance Culture and Strategic Partnerships," Abubakar emphasized the need for sophisticated maintenance to support these high-tech platforms.

He highlighted the importance of advanced, data-driven maintenance practices to match the NAF’s growing operational capabilities, noting significant investments in logistics infrastructure, spare parts, and ground support tools to ensure all aircraft are fully serviceable by Q4 2025.

“In the last two years, NAF has reached new heights in operational capability, but this progress must be backed by robust support systems to sustain air power delivery for national security,” Abubakar stated.

Air Vice Marshal A.I. Amodu, Chief of Aircraft Engineering, described engineering as the backbone of NAF’s mission, stressing the need for a proactive maintenance approach to meet evolving security demands.

He underscored the conference’s role in fostering innovation and engineering excellence.

The NAF has already acquired 15 new aircraft over the past two years, including six T-129 ATAK helicopters, two AW-109 Trekker Type A helicopters, three Beechcraft King Air surveillance aircraft, and four Diamond 62 reconnaissance planes, further strengthening its operational capacity.
