FG Sets New Minimum Age of 12 for JSS1 Admission

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a new policy setting the minimum age for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) at 12 years, following six years of primary education.

The policy, detailed in a document on non-state (private) schools released last week by the Federal Ministry of Education, aims to standardize entry ages across nursery, primary, and secondary education levels.

The policy mandates that children begin primary school at age six and complete six years of primary education before transitioning to JSS1 at around 12 years old.

This ensures students are approximately 18 upon completing secondary school, aligning with eligibility for tertiary institutions.

The Ministry emphasized the need to address inconsistencies in curriculum implementation and entry ages, particularly in private schools, which play a significant role in Nigeria’s education system.

“Children shall be admitted into Primary One at six years. Every child must complete six years of primary education and be admitted into JSS1 at around 12 years,” the document stated, as reported by Punch.

The policy aligns with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system, which includes six years of primary school, three years of junior secondary, three years of senior secondary, and four years of tertiary education.

The Ministry stressed that the policy will enhance educational progression and ensure age-appropriate learning, addressing issues like premature university admissions.
