The Federal Government has announced the sale of its nearly two-decade-old Boeing 737-700 Business Jet (BBJ), which has been in service for over 19 years.
The aircraft, acquired for $43m in 2005, has become increasingly expensive to maintain and has been subject to safety scrutiny.
According to sources within the Presidency, the decision to sell the jet follows a mechanical incident during an official trip to Saudi Arabia in April 2024. The plane had undergone inspections and maintenance in preparation for sale.
The aircraft, used during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is up for sale months after President Bola Tinubu transitioned to a refurbished Airbus A330-200 last August. Nigeria's presidential air fleet, overseen by the Nigerian Air Force and the Office of the National Security Adviser, consists of about 10 aircraft.
The fleet includes several fixed-wing aircraft, with three of the seven reportedly unserviceable. The disclosure for the sale of the Boeing 737-700 Business Jet (BBJ) was made via a US-based aircraft listing site.
