The Kano State Government has temporarily banned the importation of scrap and waste materials from northeastern states affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
The decision follows a recent wave of explosions in the state, including a bomb blast at a scrap warehouse that claimed lives and destroyed property.
The state government cited concerns over materials from conflict-affected states posing a significant security risk as the reason for the ban. The government urged the National Association of Scraps and Waste Dealers of Nigeria (NASWDEN) to develop proactive measures to screen scrap materials and prevent explosives from entering the state.
The government expressed its commitment to protecting the interests of scrap dealers and their businesses.
The association's regional president, Comrade Aminu Hassan, stated that they had already stopped sourcing materials from insurgency-affected states.
Comrade Hassan emphasized the association's commitment to lawful business practices and called on the government to support their efforts to sustain the industry. He warned that the collapse of the scrap business would have severe consequences for the manufacturing sector, which relies heavily on recycled materials.
The scrap industry provides employment for thousands of youths, with over 100,000 registered members operating in Kano State. Comrade Hassan acknowledged challenges such as the involvement of underage scavengers and rogue elements engaging in illegal activities, but distanced the association from these practices.
The Kano State Government's ban on scrap importation aims to enhance security and prevent further incidents, while also working with the industry to find sustainable solutions.
