Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has launched a full-scale investigation into the alleged involvement of the state’s Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, in securing the controversial bail of suspected drug baron Sulaiman Aminu Dan Wawu.
The directive, announced on Saturday, follows widespread public outrage after reports surfaced that Namadi’s name appeared in official documents facilitating the suspect’s release, prompting concerns about political interference in the state’s fight against drug trafficking.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Yusuf expressed deep concern over the allegations, emphasizing his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse and related vices.
“The Governor has directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the bail of the suspected drug trafficker,” the statement read.
“No one, regardless of their position, will be allowed to undermine our efforts to protect the people of Kano.”
To ensure transparency, Yusuf constituted a special investigative committee chaired by Barrister Aminu Hussain, his Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, with members including Barr.
Hamza Haladu, Barr. Hamza Nuhu Dantani, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar, Maj. Gen. Sani Muhammad (Rtd.), and Comrade Kabiru Said Dakata, with Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota as Secretary.
The committee is tasked with unraveling the incident and recommending appropriate actions immediately.
The controversy stems from a letter dated July 18, 2025, addressed to the deputy chief registrar of the Federal High Court, Kano, in which Namadi reportedly applied to stand as a surety for Dan Wawu, who was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in May 2025 on charges related to narcotics trafficking.
Dan Wawu’s arrest was hailed as a milestone in Kano’s anti-drug campaign, given his alleged role in distributing substances linked to crime and addiction among youths.
His sudden release on bail, allegedly facilitated by Namadi, has sparked accusations of betrayal, with commentators like Yakubu Musa arguing that it “erodes public trust” and “emboldens drug traffickers.”
Namadi, in a formal letter to the Federal High Court, announced his withdrawal as a surety in the case (Charge No. FHC/KN/CR/93/2025), citing personal reasons and a commitment to protecting his integrity and the dignity of his office.
He claimed his initial decision was driven by “longstanding family ties and humanitarian concerns” and denied knowledge of Dan Wawu’s “controversial profile,” stating, “At no point was I aware of the gravity of his alleged criminal activities.”
Despite his withdrawal, Namadi’s actions have drawn scrutiny.
As the committee begins its work, the scandal has ignited debates about the influence of political connections in judicial processes.
The outcome of the investigation could have far-reaching implications for the Yusuf administration and Kano’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking, with residents awaiting answers on whether justice will prevail.
