Kano Electoral Commission Chairman, Others to Face ₦1.02 Billion Money Laundering Charges

The Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi, alongside the commission’s Secretary, Anas Muhammed Mustapha, and Deputy Director of Accounts, Ado Garba, are set to be arraigned on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has charged the trio with orchestrating an alleged ₦1.02 billion money laundering scheme.

According to the ICPC, between November and December 2024, the defendants conspired to transfer ₦1.02 billion from KANSIEC’s Unity Bank account to SLM Agro Global Farm, a company with no contractual relationship with the commission.

The accused claimed the transfer was necessary due to slow bank processes for paying ad hoc staff.

However, investigations revealed that a separate ₦59.4 million payment to 468 Electoral Officers and 42 Assistant Electoral Officers was successfully processed through Unity Bank, undermining their justification.

Further scrutiny exposed irregularities in KANSIEC’s budget. A ₦20 million allocation intended for candidate screening across Kano’s 44 local government areas and 484 wards was allegedly misappropriated.

The ICPC found that the screening occurred solely at KANSIEC’s headquarters in Kano, with candidates covering their own travel expenses. The third defendant reportedly confessed to distributing the entire ₦20 million in cash to KANSIEC members, despite no field operations taking place.

The charges include conspiracy, abuse of office, and violations of Nigeria’s anti-corruption and money laundering laws.

The case has sparked public concern over the integrity of electoral processes in Kano State as the nation awaits the court’s proceedings.
