Commissioner for Transport, Ibrahim Namadi, has sparked controversy by standing as surety for Suleiman Danwawu, a suspected notorious drug dealer, to meet stringent bail conditions set by the Federal High Court in Kano.
Danwawu, facing an eight-count charge of drug trafficking filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on May 21, 2025, was granted bail on July 16 by Justice M.S. Shu’aibu, requiring a ₦3 million bond, a ₦5 million deposit in an interest-yielding account, and a serving Kano State Executive Council member as surety.
Namadi, in a letter dated July 18, 2025, addressed to the court’s deputy chief registrar, swore an affidavit to stand as surety for Danwawu, committing to ensure his court appearances until the case’s conclusion.
“I undertake to abide by the bail conditions imposed on the defendant,” Namadi wrote, as reported by Daily Nigerian.
Danwawu, 37, was arrested on May 10, 2025, by the Kano State Police Command in Tudun Yola, Gwale Local Government, for possessing controlled substances, including Tramadol, Rohypnol, Cannabis Sativa, Pregabalin, and Codeine-laced cough syrup, before being transferred to the NDLEA.
The Kano branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has announced it will closely monitor the trial due to its public interest.
When contacted, Namadi, who was in a meeting, promised to revert but had not responded at the time of this report. The case has raised questions about accountability, and there has been calls for Governor Abba Yusuf to address the issue. The trial is set to continue on August 16, 2025.
