Kaduna State Police Ban Peter Obi Supporters’ Rally, Cite Security Concerns

The Kaduna State Police Command has issued a directive halting a planned rally by supporters of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, intended to celebrate his birthday.

The decision, announced on Saturday, was based on intelligence reports indicating that criminal elements could infiltrate the event to cause disruption, incite violence, and disturb public peace.

In a statement, DSP Mansir Hassan, the Public Relations Officer for the Kaduna State Police Command, emphasized that all forms of political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across the state until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially commences political activities.

The statement highlighted concerns that the proposed rally could overlap with primary elections scheduled by other political parties, potentially leading to tension, clashes, and a breakdown of law and order.

“The Kaduna State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against any individual or group found violating this directive,” Hassan stated.

The directive has sparked varied reactions. Some residents expressed frustration on social media, with one X user describing the ban as evidence of a “full-blown dictatorship” and questioning the restriction on civil gatherings.

Others noted that the decision reflects a recurring pattern in Kaduna State, where security concerns have previously led to bans on protests and rallies, such as the 2024 prohibition of unverified protests following violent demonstrations.

The police have urged the rally organizers to comply with the directive to ensure public safety and prevent potential hijacking by miscreants. Authorities have vowed to enforce the ban strictly, warning that violators will face legal consequences.

This development comes amid heightened political activity in Nigeria, with Kaduna State remaining a focal point for both security challenges and political tensions as the nation approaches future electoral cycles.
