The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has attributed the suspension of operations on some of its rail lines to insecurity, banditry, and vandalism of its rail tracks.
According to Mr. John Otivere, an NRC official in Niger State, the challenges of insecurity and vandalism have forced the corporation to halt operations on affected routes.
The areas most affected by insecurity include Gwada, Sarkin-Pawa to Kuchi in Niger State, and Gaddani towards Gwadada in Kaduna State. The train station in Gaddani, a border community between Niger and Kaduna, has been closed for a long time due to bandit activities.
Wushishi, Pakara, and Akere have also experienced similar challenges, with the last operations in these areas dating back to December 2022.
Despite the challenges, the NRC carries out regular maintenance of its locomotive engines and rail lines.
Vandalism and banditry activities have significantly impacted railway operations, with some locations completely taken over by bandits. Erosion has also caused damage to rail lines, particularly in Mokwa, where complete tracks have been removed.
NRC officials emphasize the importance of safety in railway operations and the need to address the challenges hindering operations. The railway network is crucial to the country's economy, and prioritizing its services is essential.
