A rare and unusual case has been reported in which a baby girl developed a "microp3nis" after laying on her father's chest, who was using a testosterone gel product.
The incident serves as a warning to new parents about the potential risks of skin-to-skin contact when one of the parents is using certain medications. The baby girl was placed on her father's bare chest for skin-to-skin contact, a common practice in newborn care that has several health benefits.
Unbeknownst to the parents, the father's testosterone gel product, prescribed for low energy and libido issues, led to abnormally high levels of testosterone exposure for the baby girl. As a result, the baby's cl!toris grew longer, resembling a small penis, and her labia closed over, resembling a male scr@tum.
The parents consulted medics when their 10-month-old daughter's condition became apparent, and blood tests quickly revealed the source of the problem. After the father stopped using the testosterone gel, the baby girl's genitalia returned to normal.
Professor Jovanna Dahlgren, an expert in paediatric endocrinology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, said the case, which occurred eight years ago, was part of a half-dozen similar incidents she cited in her warning.
Talking to the Swedish newspaper Göteborgs-Posten, Professor Dahlgren said she wanted to raise awareness of the dangers hormone treatments posed to children as more and more parents are taking them.
"I don't think people always understand how potent these treatments are," she said. "The parents become completely desperate when they understand what has happened."
She added there had been another case where a 10-year-old boy developed breasts after being exposed to a female s£x hormone treatment his mother was taking.
The warning comes amid a booming industry of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), with a number of private firms marketing the hormone to men.
