India Prime Minister recalls relations with Nigeria as he Mourns Buhari's passing

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a statesman whose legacy of diplomacy and commitment to bilateral cooperation will be remembered.

In a condolence message shared via his X handle on Monday, Modi said he had fond memories of his meetings and conversations with Buhari, highlighting the late leader’s wisdom, warmth, and his unwavering support for stronger India–Nigeria relations.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth and unwavering commitment to India–Nigeria friendship stood out,” Modi said.

The Indian leader added, “I join the 1.4 billion people of India in extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people, and the government of Nigeria.”

Buhari, who died in London at the age of 81, served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

Buhari’s remains will be laid to rest in Daura on Monday, according to Islamic rites.
