In a surprising and bold statement, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed his willingness to collaborate with Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, to deliver good governance to Nigerians.
The declaration, made during a town hall meeting in Bauchi yesterday, has sparked widespread discussion across the political landscape.
Governor Mohammed, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized unity and progress over partisan divides, stating, “I will make sure I work with Peter Obi to come together and bring good governance to Nigerians.”
The comment comes amid growing calls for cross-party collaboration to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, and infrastructure deficits.Speaking to a diverse audience of community leaders, youths, and stakeholders, Mohammed praised Obi’s track record as a former governor of Anambra State and his commitment to fiscal responsibility and inclusive governance.
“Peter Obi has shown that leadership is about integrity and results. I am ready to join hands with like-minded leaders, regardless of party lines, to move Nigeria forward,” he said.
The Bauchi governor highlighted key areas for potential collaboration, including education reform, job creation, and poverty alleviation, which align with Obi’s widely publicized policy priorities.
Mohammed also called for a departure from divisive politics, urging leaders to prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal or regional interests.Political analysts see the statement as a potential game-changer ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is a significant moment. Governor Mohammed’s openness to working with Obi signals a shift toward coalition-building, which could reshape Nigeria’s political dynamics,” said Dr. Aisha Ibrahim, a political commentator based in Abuja.
Peter Obi, who has remained a vocal advocate for good governance since his 2023 presidential run, responded positively to the governor’s remarks via a post on X. “I welcome Gov. Bala Mohammed’s call for collaboration. Together, we can build a Nigeria that works for all. Let’s focus on the people,” Obi wrote.
However, the statement has stirred mixed reactions within the PDP and beyond. While some party members praised Mohammed’s inclusive approach, others expressed concerns about its implications for party unity. A PDP chieftain, who spoke anonymously, noted, “This could be seen as a strategic move to broaden alliances, but it may ruffle feathers among those loyal to the party’s traditional structure.”
In Bauchi, residents have expressed optimism about the proposed partnership. Aisha Usman, a local entrepreneur, said, “If leaders like Bala Mohammed and Peter Obi work together, we might finally see the change we’ve been praying for.
Nigerians are tired of empty promises.”As the nation grapples with economic and security challenges, Mohammed’s call for collaboration could set the stage for a new era of bipartisan efforts.
The governor concluded his address by urging Nigerians to hold leaders accountable while supporting initiatives that prioritize development and unity.
