The Kano State Commissioner for Transport, Ibrahim Ali
Namadi Dala, has distanced himself from Sulaiman Danwawu, a suspect facing drug
trafficking charges currently being prosecuted before a Federal High Court in
Kano.
Reports had emerged that Commissioner Namadi stood as surety
for Danwawu during court proceedings, prompting a wave of criticism and concern
from various quarters within and outside the state.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, Namadi clarified
that he had no personal or professional ties with the defendant, describing
Danwawu as a known drug offender.
He explained that his decision to stand as surety was based
purely on the appeal of “highly respected and credible individuals” who vouched
for the suspect’s character.
According to Namadi, he only later discovered the full
extent of the charges against Danwawu.
“I had no prior knowledge of the severity of the allegations
levelled against him. The revelations that have since come to light have left
me deeply shocked,” the commissioner said.
According to a reports Justice M.S. Shuaibu granted bail to
the accused on July 17 after hearing submissions from his legal team.
Namadi emphasized that the bail followed due legal process,
noting that under Nigerian law, a suspect is presumed innocent until proven
guilty.
The commissioner explained that part of the bail conditions
required a serving commissioner from the Kano State government to act as
surety.
He said trusted individuals approached him with this
request, and he obliged in good faith.
Expressing his regret, Namadi said, “My core values do not
align with shielding criminals or undermining the rule of law,” he said, adding
that he has already consulted his lawyers about the possibility of formally
withdrawing as surety.
“I sincerely regret being entangled in this unfortunate
situation. I assure the Kano State Government and the general public of my
unwavering support for justice, transparency, and lawful conduct,” he added.
Namadi reaffirmed his opposition to drug trafficking,
terrorism, and any activity that threatens the peace and progress of the state.
