President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presided over a solemn special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Thursday, July 17, at the State House in Abuja to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at age 82.
The expanded session, attended by National Assembly leaders, judiciary members, cabinet ministers, and Buhari’s family, was part of national mourning activities following Buhari’s burial in Daura, Katsina State.
In a moving tribute, Tinubu described Buhari as a “soldier in war, citizen in peace,” and a disciplined patriot whose legacy of humility, anti-corruption efforts, and democratic contributions endures.
He highlighted their partnership in achieving Nigeria’s first democratic power transfer between parties in 2015, noting Buhari’s calm resolve and moral integrity.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also praised Buhari as a principled leader who “gave everything” to Nigeria.
The session, marked by prayers and a moment of silence, underscored Buhari’s over 50 years of service, including his roles as military Head of State (1983–1985) and President (2015–2023).
Tinubu announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University in his honor.
