Governor Uzodinma hosts Seven Imo-Born Super Falcons Stars for WAFCON Victory

Governor Hope Uzodinma hosted a grand reception on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, for seven Imo State natives who were part of Nigeria’s Super Falcons team that clinched the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.

The event, held at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Owerri, honored the players’ contributions to Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON championship, secured with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses on July 26, 2025.

The celebrated players included goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who won the Best Goalkeeper award at the tournament, Osinachi Ohale, Tochukwu Oluehi, Jennifer Echegini, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Anam Imo, and Esther Okoronkwo.

Notably, Michelle Alozie, another Imo-born player, was absent from the event, having reportedly returned to her base in the United States.

Governor Uzodinma, who joined other governors and ministers to welcome the Super Falcons at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on July 28, 2025, praised the team’s resilience and unity.

In a statement shared on his official X handle, he described their performance as a “testament to discipline and commitment,” noting that their “steeze and composure” inspired national pride. “This victory is not just a win on the pitch; it is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when commitment, discipline, and national pride come together,” he said.

eports indicate that Uzodinma gifted each of the seven Imo-born players $25,000 as a token of appreciation for their stellar performances and for making Imo State proud.

The gesture was part of the state’s commitment to supporting its athletes and inspiring the younger generation.

However, the governor’s decision to host only players of Imo origin sparked controversy on social media, with some accusing him of promoting tribalism. Social media activist Verydarkman criticized Uzodinma, stating, “To the EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF IMO STATE, Senator Hope Uzodinma, you of all people should know 7 don’t make a team. It’s really disappointing to see this.”

Others, however, defended the governor, noting that other state governors also hosted players from their respective states, suggesting it was a common practice to celebrate local talent.

The Super Falcons’ WAFCON triumph was widely celebrated across Nigeria, with the team honored by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The victory parade in the capital city also drew massive fan support, and several players received individual accolades for their performances throughout the tournament.

Uzodinma reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting sports development in Imo State, assuring the players of continued backing.

“Their outstanding performance inspires our younger generations, and we salute them as true role models,” he said, emphasizing the role of sports in fostering unity and national pride.
