Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on July 30, 2025, warmly received a significant number of defectors from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) into the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a vibrant ceremony in Abeokuta.
The defections, seen as a strategic boost for the APC, are expected to solidify the party’s dominance in Ogun State as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The event, held at the APC state secretariat, drew a large crowd of party loyalists, defectors, and supporters, with Governor Abiodun personally welcoming the new members.
Among the defectors were prominent PDP figures and former APM members, including key grassroots mobilizers, who cited Abiodun’s inclusive governance and developmental strides as reasons for their switch.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Abiodun, who has served as Ogun State’s governor since May 29, 2019, emphasized unity and progress within the APC.
“We are building a stronger, more inclusive party that prioritizes the welfare of Ogun State’s people. I welcome our new members from the PDP and APM, whose decision to join us reflects their belief in our vision of sustainable development,” he stated.
Abiodun highlighted his administration’s achievements, including infrastructure development and economic revitalization, as key factors attracting defectors.
The defections comes on the heels of Abiodun’s re-election in March 2023, where he secured 276,298 votes to defeat PDP’s Ladi Adebutu (262,383 votes) and ADC’s Biyi Otegbeye (94,754 votes), consolidating his grip on Ogun politics.
The APC’s Ogun State chapter, through its Publicity Secretary Tunde Oladunjoye, described the defections as a testament to Abiodun’s leadership and a rejection of opposition tactics, referencing past tensions with former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, whose APM structure previously challenged Abiodun but has since largely collapsed into the APC.
Notable defectors include former PDP local government chairmen and APM youth leaders, though specific names were not disclosed at the event.
An APC insider noted that the party’s open-door policy and Abiodun’s reconciliatory approach, evident since his 2019 victory over APM’s Adekunle Akinlade, have encouraged opposition members to join the ruling party.
The source added that these defections weaken the PDP’s structure in Ogun State, particularly as the party focuses on Adebutu as its sole aspirant for 2027.
