FG Vows to End Medical Tourism with Enhanced Healthcare Facilities

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to curbing medical tourism by upgrading healthcare infrastructure and manpower, as highlighted during the commissioning of a new Linear Accelerator and Oncology Infrastructure Upgrade at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, alongside Ministers Wale Edun (Finance and Economy) and Mohammed Idris (Information and National Orientation), emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to improving Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Pate revealed that Nigerians have spent over $1 billion annually on medical tourism in the past 15 years, particularly for cancer treatment.

To address this, the Tinubu administration has doubled the health budget from N1.7 billion in 2024 to N2.3 billion in 2025 and approved modern linear accelerators for each geopolitical zone.

The Enugu project, a partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Medserve, underscores this commitment.

Meanwhile, the Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP) has launched a research centre at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre (CWC) in Oba, Anambra State, to enhance pharmaceutical quality assurance.

The centre, inaugurated by Dr. U.N.O. Uwaga with HRM Igwe Ezechuamagha I of Ogidi Kingdom as Guest of Honour, ensures rigorous product evaluations to meet national and international standards.

NAIP plans similar centres in Kano and Lagos to strengthen Nigeria’s pharmaceutical market and combat drug insecurity.NAIP National Chairman, Pharm. Bankole Aminu Ezebuilo, described the initiative as a milestone for advancing Nigeria’s global pharmaceutical reputation.

These combined efforts signal a transformative push toward self-reliance in healthcare and pharmaceutical integrity.
