FG Increases Scholarship Grants Across All Education Levels

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a significant 50% increase in scholarship grants for students across all levels of tertiary education, effective immediately, to bolster educational access and support academic excellence.

The announcement, made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a press briefing in Abuja, aims to alleviate financial burdens on students amid rising economic challenges.

Under the revised Nigerian Scholarship Award and other major programmes, PhD students will now receive ₦750,000 annually, up from ₦500,000. Master’s students are set to benefit from an increase to ₦600,000, previously ₦400,000, while undergraduate, Higher National Diploma (HND), and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) students will now receive ₦450,000, up from ₦300,000.Dr. Alausa emphasized that the increment reflects the government’s commitment to education as a cornerstone of national development.

“This administration recognizes the importance of investing in our youth. By increasing these grants, we aim to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder academic pursuit and innovation,” he stated.

The decision has been met with widespread approval from student bodies and educational stakeholders.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, described the move as “a timely intervention that will motivate students to excel and reduce dropout rates.”

However, some stakeholders urged the government to ensure timely disbursement of funds, citing past delays in scholarship payments.

The increased grants apply to all federal scholarship programmes, including those managed by the Federal Scholarship Board, and cover students in public tertiary institutions nationwide.

The Ministry of Education has assured that mechanisms are in place to streamline the application and disbursement processes to ensure transparency and efficiency.

This development comes as part of broader reforms in the education sector, with the government pledging further investments to improve infrastructure, research funding, and access to quality education across Nigeria.
