Federal Government Approves Long-Awaited Pensions for Retired Aviation Workers

In a landmark decision, the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the release of long-overdue pension payments for retired aviation workers, bringing relief to thousands who dedicated years of service to the nation’s aviation sector.

The announcement, made by the Ministry of Aviation on Tuesday, marks the end of a prolonged struggle for retirees, particularly those from defunct national carriers like Nigeria Airways.

The approval follows years of relentless advocacy by unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees, which have consistently pushed for justice and financial security for retirees.

Many of these workers, who served as pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers, and ground staff, had faced financial hardship due to delays in pension disbursements, some waiting over two decades for their entitlements.

“This is a victory for perseverance and fairness,” said Comrade Ahmed Musa, a union leader representing aviation retirees.

“These workers gave their best years to keep Nigeria’s skies safe. Today, their dignity is being restored.”

The Ministry of Aviation has assured stakeholders that the pension payments will be processed promptly, with a commitment to transparency and accountability.

A dedicated task force has been established to oversee the disbursement process, ensuring that funds reach the rightful beneficiaries without delay.

While specific timelines and amounts were not disclosed, officials emphasized that mechanisms are in place to prevent mismanagement.

Industry stakeholders have hailed the move as a significant step toward rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“This is not just about money; it’s about respect and recognition for those who laid the foundation for our industry,” said Captain Aisha Bello, a retired pilot and advocate for pensioners’ rights.

The decision has sparked widespread celebration among retirees and their families, with many expressing hope that this marks a turning point for Nigeria’s treatment of its public servants.

As the government begins processing payments, the focus now shifts to ensuring swift and equitable delivery to all eligible retirees.
