Fashola Urges Sanwo-Olu to Safeguard Lagos Heritage Amid Street Renaming Backlash

Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has called on the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to preserve the state’s rich history and avoid distortions, particularly in the ongoing controversy surrounding street renaming in Lagos.

Fashola’s remarks, made during a public lecture in Lagos on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, come as debates intensify over recent decisions to rename certain streets and landmarks in the state.

Speaking at the event organized by the Lagos History Preservation Society, Fashola emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of Lagos’s historical narrative. “Lagos is a city with a deep and vibrant history that shapes its identity.

We must preserve this history to avoid distortion and promote values that unite us,” he stated, according to posts shared on X. He cautioned that renaming streets without proper consultation or historical context risks eroding the cultural and historical significance of the state.

The controversy stems from recent moves by the Sanwo-Olu administration to rename select streets, reportedly to honor contemporary figures or align with urban development initiatives.

Critics, including historians and community leaders, argue that such actions overlook the contributions of historical figures and traditional landmarks integral to Lagos’s heritage.

Specific streets mentioned in the debate include those named after colonial-era figures and indigenous leaders, though no official list of proposed changes has been confirmed by the state government.

Fashola, who governed Lagos from 2007 to 2015, urged the administration to engage stakeholders, including traditional rulers, historians, and residents, before implementing renaming decisions.

“History is not just about names; it’s about the stories and values they carry. We must ensure that any changes reflect the aspirations of Lagosians and respect our shared heritage,” he said.

The Sanwo-Olu administration has yet to issue an official response to Fashola’s remarks or the broader controversy.

However, a source within the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, speaking anonymously, noted that the government is reviewing feedback from stakeholders to ensure decisions align with public interest.

Fashola’s intervention adds to his legacy of advocating for good governance and cultural preservation in Lagos.

During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives to document and promote the state’s history, including the restoration of historical sites like the Tafawa Balewa Square.

His call for caution resonates with ongoing efforts by civil society groups to safeguard Lagos’s heritage amid rapid urbanization.

As the debate continues, residents and observers await further clarification from the Sanwo-Olu administration on its street renaming plans and how it will address concerns about preserving Lagos’s historical identity.
