Jack Dorsey, former chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter (now X), has introduced BitChat, an internet-free messaging social network to rival United States tech billionaire Elon Musk’s X.
The app, which is still in its early stages, was revealed by Dorsey in a post on X.
According to Dorsey, the platform is a personal project exploring Bluetooth mesh networking, message encryption and decentralised communication.
“My weekend project is to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store-and-forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things,” he wrote.
He further explained that BitChat uses a store-and-forward architecture where messages are relayed from one Bluetooth-enabled device to another until they reach the intended recipient.
Recall that in November 2021, Dorsey announced his resignation from X.
In October 2022, Musk completed the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, which he later renamed X.
