The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, condemned the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) in Kano State, calling for stricter punishments for perpetrators.
Speaking at his palace on Monday, July 21, during a visit by a delegation from the Development Research and Project Center (dRPC) and Bayero University’s Center for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue (CICID), the emir emphasized that no true Muslim would resort to beating or raping women, as such acts contradict Islamic teachings.
The delegation, funded by the Ford Foundation, was advocating for a project to mentor Muslim Opinion Leaders (MOLs) to combat GBV in Muslim-majority northern states.
Sanusi described the initiative as timely, noting the alarming increase in men abusing their spouses under the guise of “reforming” them.
“Islam dignifies women more than any other religion,” he stated, citing Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to assert that those who beat or injure their wives are neither good Muslims nor knowledgeable about the faith.
Drawing from his PhD research on the codification of Islamic family law, Sanusi revealed that his five-year study of nine Shari’a courts in Kano uncovered a troubling prevalence of GBV.
He urged the delegation to revive the Kano State family draft, which addresses key GBV challenges, noting that existing Islamic jurisprudence provides robust legal frameworks to tackle the issue.
“All we need is to compile and implement them,” he said.
The emir also issued a stern warning to community leaders, stating that any district or village head caught beating his wife risks losing his title.
He challenged Islamic clerics and Imams to lead societal change by educating communities on the unacceptability of GBV. “Those who abuse women do not understand the religion,” Sanusi declared, urging collective action to end the menace in Kano and beyond.
