A wave of surprise and murmurs swept through an All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsement rally in Ekiti State on July 27, 2025, when former Governor Ayodele Fayose made a bold appearance wearing a cap emblazoned with the logo of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The rally, organized to endorse Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, took an unexpected turn as Fayose’s attire sparked speculation about his political allegiance.
Fayose, a prominent PDP chieftain and former two-term governor of Ekiti State, attended the event in Ado-Ekiti alongside APC stalwarts, including Governor Oyebanji and other party loyalists.
His decision to wear a PDP-branded cap at the APC-dominated gathering drew mixed reactions from attendees and triggered a social media frenzy.
Addressing the crowd, Fayose clarified that his presence was a gesture of goodwill toward Governor Oyebanji, whom he described as a “focused and hardworking leader delivering for Ekiti.”
He praised Oyebanji’s developmental strides and Tinubu’s economic reforms but stopped short of announcing a defection from the PDP.
“I am here to support good governance, not to play party politics. My cap is PDP, but my heart is with progress,” Fayose said, prompting cheers from some attendees and skeptical glances from others.
APC leaders at the rally, including the state party chairman, downplayed the incident, emphasizing unity and Oyebanji’s inclusive leadership.
However, PDP members in Ekiti expressed disappointment, with a local party official telling reporters, “Fayose’s actions confuse our supporters. He needs to clarify his stand.”
The incident has fueled speculation about Fayose’s political future, with some analysts suggesting he may be positioning himself as a bridge between the PDP and APC in Ekiti ahead of 2027.
Others view it as a classic Fayose move to remain relevant by stirring controversy.
As the rally concluded, the former governor left the venue smiling, leaving attendees and observers debating whether his PDP cap was a deliberate statement or a playful jab at political norms.
