Displaced Traders Protest in Jos, Plead for Government Support

Displaced traders from the burnt Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State capital, staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday, pleading with the government to provide them with adequate space to sell their goods.

The traders, carrying placards with messages such as "Government, pity us, we are hungry" and "We are not terrorists," were supervised by the police and Civil Defence Corps.

The traders protested peacefully, without blocking roads or posing a threat to passersby. The traders' leader, Anthony Michael, requested that the government provide them with enough space to sell their goods, citing the current allocated area as insufficient.

The government had instructed the traders to vacate the burnt market area, which is undergoing renovation, but the traders claim the new space is inadequate.

A trader, Mrs. Happiness Abubakar, appealed to the government to assist them, stating that many traders have been unfairly excluded from benefiting from government-provided shops.

She pleaded to the government to help them as they do not want to be rendered jobless and idle.

She said that the government provided 1,000 shops, but that only 400 shops were physically rented out, while 600 of the shops were being manipulated by forces beyond their control, sidelining those who were supposed to benefit.
